What to sew for a baby shower?

Looking to sew something little for a new little one? Making a baby something special is a great way to welcome them and give them something as unique as they are. There’s something about those tiny toes that brings out the crafting and sewing aspirations.

Here are 5 ideas of what to make for a baby shower and a FREE PATTERN!

 1. A blanket. It’s a nice easy rectangle that if you can sew somewhat straight it can look great. This can be as simple as a yard of fabric that you finish the edges on. Or you could fold the raw edges over twice about a ½ inch each time, press and pin down and sew in place. Or if you want to be even fancier dress it up with a double fold binding.

2. A little hat. This generally will use a knit fabric so it is a great small project to practice your knit fabric skills or if you are experienced get out your serger and make some cute ones. Check out my baby hat sewing pattern here for some inspiration.

3. A shirt. A simple shirt is a great gender neutral gift and will work with layers in the winter or on its own in the summer. My apple shirt pattern makes an adorable baby shirt in sizes 6-12 months and in a 1-2T. You’ll need 1 yard (or 1 meter) of woven fabric to make the shirt and it is gender neutral. 4. MAMA and baby set! Matching sets are super cute and great way to make sure the parents get a treat too. Check out my super cute hat set that works for any parents-to-be and their new little one. Also makes a super cute coordinated look for family photos.

5. A stuffy. Check out Kiriki Press and mine collaboration for a bunny and overalls collab. Or look on spoonflower for some easy cut and sew patterns to inspire you.

Make Good Fabric Choices

Look for fabrics that are easy to wash and dry care like organic cotton because you know its going be a little bit messy! A few of the small projects listed are great ways to use up your stash. Or if you would rather go shopping, check out your local fabric store for their fabric suggestions.

Tiny Projects with Big Results

Childrens sewing patterns can be really satisfying to sew. You can bang out multiples of the these in an afternoon and use up your fabric stash. I love doing small things like these because the time and money investment can be so small too.

These 5 suggestions and tips are great starting points for sewing patterns for kids. Hope you find some inspiration for your next teeny tiny project. Good luck!
